ENABLING – HOW I SEE IT
I’ve been thinking deeply about enabling.
What is enabling?
If you want a loved one who is struggling with addiction to stop, one of the most important things you can do is stop enabling them.
Here are some ways enabling shows up; often with good intentions:
1. Believing lies without discernment:
If you believe a lie your loved one tells you and fall for it, you are enabling them. It takes effort on your part to become street‑smart and to gently but firmly debunk those lies.
2. Acting out of desperation:
If you act out of desperation, you are enabling them. A sound mind produces clear solutions, but a desperate mind is like stirred waters, clarity is out of reach when desperation takes over.
3. Ignoring knowledge about addiction:
Know all you can about addiction; it is a disease. Would you give someone who has cancer sweets all the time? Probably not. That’s basic knowledge. In the same…
